On February 16, 2012, we were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of New York Times journalist Anthony Shadid.

His coverage of the Middle East included the recent Arab Spring uprisings and the perils of everyday citizens living in a tumultuous region. His insight and contributions were twice recognized with a Pulitzer Prize.

We first met Anthony Shadid on a cold, rainy day in Boston, after he left the Washington Post and was preparing to return to Lebanon. He shared his personal journey that led him to his career as a Middle Eastern correspondent.

Anthony had been a strong supporter and good friend to this project since the beginning. We will always remember him fondly. May he rest in peace.
